The Taney Youth Baseball Association (“TYBA”) is and always will be an inclusive, non-political, youth sports non-profit focused on a mission of providing quality youth sports programming available to all area youth. However, recent events have put the issues of social and racial equity, equality and diversity into clear focus in Philadelphia and throughout the country. Even prior to the recent protests and the resulting elevation of our national consciousness regarding these critical issues, the name “Taney” has remained a source of divisiveness.
Two years ago when the issue of our league’s name was most recently questioned, TYBA’s Board of Directors undertook an extensive historical investigation of the origins of the street name “Taney,” the source of our league's name. Our research yielded no evidence that the name of the street was connected, in any way, to the now infamous Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney.
Despite the absence of any evidence linking the two, we cannot ignore the very real negative feelings that this name, "Taney," engenders among members of our community. As a result, TYBA’s Board will undertake a thoughtful process over the coming weeks and months to find a new name for our league. This process will be conducted by the Board and will strive to find a name that is inclusive, non-divisive, and also speaks to our league’s geography.
We hope to announce a new name in the late summer/early fall of this year.
